Lifetime of Income Insufficient for UK Employees to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Analysis Finds

According to recent research, the average employee in the UK would need half a century of income to achieve the net worth of the richest 10% nationwide.

Expanding Economic Disparity Over Time

The study analyzed wealth distribution statistics covering the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that during the pre-financial crisis era, it would have needed nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to join the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

A research lead involved with the study stated: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a average worker setting aside their entire income throughout their career would still not be able to achieve the peak of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The analysis found that the difference between the assets of the average person and someone in the top 10% was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had increased to 1.3 million pounds in actual value by the pandemic years.

The researcher further stated: "These differences are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is restricted – people that start life well-off tend to stay wealthy, and conversely applies."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Even with the financial disparity widening in specific figures, the share of total wealth in the UK held by the most affluent homes – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s era," per the study.

Throughout these years, total wealth in the UK surged from thrice the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Financial Divide

So-called "unearned" gains, by means of increasing property values and adjustments to superannuation evaluations, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide over the past decade, according to the study.

These gains typically went to older, property-owning households, the study demonstrates – intensifying the intergenerational wealth divide.

Generational Financial Divides

The average wealth gap between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings increased over twofold in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135,000 in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Regional Differences

Additionally, there were significant regional variations, with the average level of assets in 2020-22 standing at £290,000 in south-east England, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the NE of England.

Health Crisis Years Impact

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions curtailed consumption options, the information reveals countless homes were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families performed significantly better, however. "The median home in the bottom income bracket saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (from 2019 to 2022), approximately equivalent to the two years pre-pandemic. In contrast, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the report finds.
