EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
