Comeback Medvedev Claims Maiden Trophy in 882 Days

Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been won on hard courts

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for over two years with success over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament championship match.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has endured a torrid period, winning just one win at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the American major.

His inconsistency on the tennis tour - and issues with his serving in particular - caused him dropping out of the elite rankings and ultimately splitting with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.

Now working with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a closely contested three-set win over opponent Moutet.

It is Medvedev's first trophy since the Rome competition and maiden on a hardcourt from that period of that year.

Victory also indicates Medvedev has secured 21 victories at twenty-one different competitions.

"For the first time I am participating in a event with my children at once, so to win a trophy is especially meaningful," commented world number 14 Medvedev.

"This championship is in dedication of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had lost his past six championship matches, featuring in the German tournament previously this season.

Medvedev's defensive play style and recurring reactions on court had caused observers to wonder if his skill to compete at the highest level was finished.

But the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and play positively, backed up by an improved serving game.

He fought back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the difficult opponent, taking four of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.

The pair traded service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his maiden ATP Tour championship, gained dominance to push for a final set.

Moutet defended 4 early chances in a tight third set before the champion won the break to that score to serve for the match.

Suitably, the winner clinched the win with a point at the net area, with his opponent incapable to manage a volley after a lengthy match.
